Robert Hayden
American Journal
Poems
American Journal collects most of Robert Hayden's work since his Angle
of Ascent (1975). First published in 1978 in an Effendi Press limited edition
and nominated for the National Book Award at that time, this edition includes ten
new poems. Perhaps best known of the work collected here are the "Elegies for
Paradise Valley," a series of eight poems set in Hayden's boyhood Detroit.
